    Fresh homemade Pizza Sauce

This quick 15 minute pizza sauce is made from canned diced tomatoes. If you are looking for a pasta sauce recipe made from fresh tomatoes, check out my Pappardelle in Fresh Tomato Sauce.

This tomato sauce is super simple but absolutely delicious. I personally love a good sauce on my pizza and consider it an essential ingredient. If the sauce is not good, the whole pizza cannot live up to my expectation.

    Here's what you need

These are the ingredients you will need to make this homemade pizza sauce. Detailed measurements can be found on the bottom of the page in the recipe card 👇.

Picture showing all ingredients for homemade pizza sauce

Canned Diced Tomatoes - This recipe is for a quick tomato sauce. Therefore, I use canned diced tomatoes in tomato juice. Canned diced tomatoes are usually very rich in flavor and give a great taste to our sauce. I buy tomatoes that are not preseasoned and pay attention to the ingredients listed to avoid unnecessary fillers and preservatives. The canned diced tomatoes I buy have two ingredients, tomatoes and tomato juice.

Onion & Garlic - are essential ingredients for our tomato sauce. If you don't like garlic or are allergic, you can leave it out. I use fresh garlic cloves, not the powder. As for the onions, you can use yellow onion, sweet onion, Spanish onion or shallots.

Dried Oregano - Oregano is one of the seasonings that remains flavourful as a dried herb. Even though I prefer to use most herbs in their fresh form, this is one of the herbs which I \ always have in the pantry in dried form. If you use fresh oregano, reduce the given amount by half. If you wish to substitute the oregano entirely, I would recommend fresh chopped basil leaves instead.

Sugar is a natural flavor enhancer for all tomato based sauces and soups. It balances the acid and makes your sauce more flavourful! You can substitute for maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar or leave it out entirely if preferred.

Salt & Pepper - Staples for every recipe, which don't require further explanation 😉

Olive Oil - a little bit of olive oil to glaze the onions and the garlic. Any other frying oil will do.

Chili oil / chili flakes (optional) - This is an optional ingredient. I like to add a little pep to my sauce. In the picture above you see a homemade hot sauce. You can also use chili flakes or cayenne pepper or none of the above.

How to make Pizza Sauce at home

This sauce is made in less than 15 minutes. Everything you need is a small pot, a knife, cutting board and a handheld blender. If you don't have a blender, cook your sauce a bit longer and break the tomato pieces down by using a potato masher or a large spoon. You will have more of a chunky sauce with this method.

    1. Peel and chop the onion and the garlic clove. Keep both ingredients separated. The sauce will be blended at the end, so don't put too much effort into fine chopping.
    2. Heat the olive oil in a small pot on medium high heat. Add the onions first. Garlic burns quicker and becomes bitter, therefore it should be added later.
    3. When the onions turn translucent, add the chopped garlic clove and stir fry both for another minute.
    4. Next, add the oregano, the canned diced tomatoes, salt, pepper and sugar. Stir well and turn heat to medium low.
    5. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, then blend the sauce using a handblender according to your liking (more or less chunky or completely smooth). Remove from heat and let the sauce cool down.

Your sauce is now ready to use for your pizza!🍕

    Storage

Can I keep the unused sauce in the fridge?

Yes, you can store the leftover sauce in the fridge for 3-5 days in a sealed container. Please let the sauce cool down before placing it in the refrigerator.

Can I freeze the tomato sauce?

Yes, this sauce freezes well. Fill it in a container suited for freezing or in a freezer bag. Make sure to let the sauce cool down completely prior to freezing. I make sure to use it within 3 months of freezing. Remove from the freezer and unfreeze in the refrigerator overnight prior to use.

Love this sauce, easy and no-fail, I always wanted to try homemade pizza before but I get intimidated with making the sauce to make it right.
